York Grooming – At Home or with a Professional Groomer?
Dog care is a process that you can delegate to professionals for a fee. In large and small cities, you can find large, luxurious dog grooming salons as well as smaller, modest grooming salons. All of this can help in taking care of the dog.
The groomer’s job goes beyond brushing and trimming the hair of dogs and cats. Expanding the range of services to include haircuts (especially for long-haired animals), bathing animals with pet-specific cosmetics, trimming (removal of dead hair, especially in furry animals – the coat looks healthier and gains color thanks to this treatment), teeth brushing, nail trimming, cleaning and removing hair from ears, as well as removing parasites (ticks, fleas).
Grooming at Home
However, there is nothing to prevent you from grooming your dog at home. It all depends on the right intention. Skills can be acquired just like the proper equipment. Grooming at home can be a good idea for those who do not want to hand their dog over to a stranger because they want to take care of it themselves.
If you are doing it for the first time, you may not have sufficient skills. So it is best to use scissors to move slowly, but it is safer for the dog to avoid skin damage. The order in which you address various body parts is not very important. Let’s start with the part that is most comfortable for us. Groomers have different grooming techniques and work in their own order – some start from the body, others from the nails. Usually, the face is saved for last because it has many details to work on and is a sensitive area. Dogs should be trimmed from top to bottom, not under the fur. Remember practical things like finishing the belly (that area loves to get dirty). You can also trim the nails right away during grooming and it’s worth checking the whole dog’s body for ticks.
How Often Should You Groom a York?
Grooming a York should be done by a dog groomer on average once a month to protect the dog from ear infections. The procedure also prevents eye diseases and makes seeing easier. Brushing a York should be repeated weekly. The dog’s hair should also be styled so it does not cover or irritate the eyes. Every three weeks, we check our York’s ears. If necessary, remove excess hair. We use special powder for this and pull out the hair, do not cut it with scissors! Ears need ventilation, not just to look good. You can gently wipe the ear flap with a cotton pad soaked in a special ear rinse solution. When cleaning ears, do not use cotton swabs, as they can easily damage the ear.
