Dogs are members of our families, but also our best friends, so we should remember that if we care about their health, we need to feed them well. This raises the question: what should we feed our dog to ensure they don’t get sick and live a long life?
BARF diet – even the fussiest dog will love it
Just a few decades ago, people fed their dogs whatever they could find, mostly leftovers. However, a responsible owner does not treat their pet like a proverbial garbage can and cares about their health and well-being. The BARF diet is definitely a good choice, which involves feeding raw meat to the animal. It is also important to remember that, contrary to popular belief, a dog is not omnivorous, but carnivorous, so its diet should be based on meat, and raw meat is best absorbed. Many pets on this diet have stopped having digestive problems, and their fur is, of course, soft and smooth. Here, it’s important to know what kind of meat can be given to dogs. It’s best to choose beef, veal, as well as poultry, provided that the dog is not allergic to it. Horse meat and lamb are also allowed, and importantly, the meat does not have to be first grade. Offal can also be given, but no more than once a week. Interestingly, bones are allowed too, provided that you grind them down, along with cartilage and eggshells. You can find more about the diet here.
Can you cook for your dog?
More and more owners are cooking for their pets, and this type of diet is indeed recommended and healthy. But it is important to remember that during cooking, meat loses a lot of vitamins and nutrients. As a result, cooked food needs supplementation, but this is not difficult at all; after all, to provide your dog with a decent dose of calcium, you can simply give them ground eggshells. You can also give sea algae and a bit of wild salmon oil. If your four-legged friend likes vegetables, you can definitely give them some. We recommend carrots, as well as beets or even a piece of bell pepper. Fruits, such as apples, won’t harm them either.
Or maybe dry food?
Many guardians feed their dogs dry food, believing it to be the best. This is not entirely true, because while it is balanced, it may not be absorbed as well. The problem also lies in the fact that some manufacturers add a lot of salt to dry food, causing illnesses and kidney problems in animals. Obviously, it is necessary to avoid foods with added grains, as these are just fillers. If you absolutely want to feed dry food, make sure to choose a higher-end brand.
It’s also worth thinking about treats, but not compressed bones, which are unhealthy. We definitely recommend preparing or buying dried meat.
